Following on from our Cyber Security overview, we thought we would discuss Anti-Virus a bit more in depth. We thought Anti-Virus would be the best to start with as it is such a basic requirement that you need. It is something so easy to get right. All you need to do is make sure you have it and make sure it's licensed properly.
It’s a common misconception that you don’t need Anti-Virus on your servers, You DEFINITELY need Anti-Virus on your servers. I don’t quite understand why people think they wouldn’t need it on their servers, all of your data is stored there, your users are accessing the data that’s on there. It’s absolutely mind boggling that you wouldn’t put Anti-Virus on your servers.
The real question is, what Anti-Virus do you go for?
Most free Anti-Virus out there will not be licensed for commercial purposes. Things like AVG, or Avast, they all have their own free versions, which can only be used for personal use. If anything, the free Anti-virus for home products are worse as they bundle in so much junk into them. They will bundle in firewalls, web browser protection, website production and email protection and all these things will slow your computer down.
There are so many different Anti-Virus brands out there to choose from. I’m not going to recommend which one to go for because by the time this blog goes out, another product will be better. One week, one Anti-Virus product will be better because they released a definition before anyone else. The next week, someone else will get in their first.
Do you need Anti-Virus on your Apple machines?
This is a very good question, and it's one that’s divided opinions for a while. My personal opinion is that you don’t need it. The built-in protection within OSX software is actually pretty good. However, I would caveat that if you are a person that has a tendency to get infected quite often, then I would say Anti-Virus is well worth having on that machine.
There is still a ratio of more Windows machines than Mac, so more people are writing viruses for Window Machines than Macs. That doesn’t mean that Macs won’t get any Viruses, it just means with the law of averages that more people are writing viruses for windows.
